Opera director Viktorija Streiča says of the upcoming production that Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is an opera in which comedy becomes a way to address mechanisms of power, social hierarchy, and people’s efforts to preserve their dignity. This story is not about a wedding or an intrigue, but about who has the right to decide and who must accept things as they are; about structures in which freedom becomes a privilege and dependence the norm. This production is about the present day, about patriarchy, where a woman is still described as “belonging” to someone; about how “I do what I want” becomes the everyday practice of the powerful; and about how love, wisdom, and solidarity become a quiet form of resistance. The opera will remain a comedy, but it will speak about serious matters. Here, laughter is not an escape but a critique. The absurd is not decoration but a form of truth. The characters are vivid, the emotions extreme, the situations heated, but everything serves one purpose: to bring injustice into sharp focus so that it can be recognised, named, and destroyed.
