Premiere: October 4, 2024
Featuring: Theatre soloists, chorus and ballet artists; Theatre Orchestra.
The musical SUGAR is a musical adaptation of the film “Some Like It Hot.” Like the film, its plot is based on Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s play “Some Like It Hot.” It features music rooted in the finest jazz traditions of the 1950s and 1960s, nostalgically transporting audiences to a lively satire of the criminal underworld in pre-war America, colored with a retro palette.
The story reveals how, on Valentine’s Day 1929, a gangland massacre took place in Chicago. Two jazz musicians accidentally witness it. To hide from the mafia hitmen pursuing them, they disguise themselves as women and get jobs in an all-female jazz orchestra. There they meet the charming singer Sugar Kane, who dreams of marrying a millionaire. The men are swept into the whirl of women’s lives and encounter things that are not usually revealed to men. How long can they keep hiding when scantily clad women are constantly around them, sharing their most intimate secrets? Events begin to unfold in a way neither musician had planned.
The musical “Sugar” premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 9, 1972, starring Robert Morse, Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce. It ran for 505 performances over more than a year. The musical’s success is reflected in the “Sugar” productions that return to Broadway every few decades.
