The musical SUGAR is a musical adaptation of the film “Some Like It Hot.” Like the film, its plot is based on the play “Some Like It Hot” by B. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond. Its music, rooted in the finest jazz traditions of the 1950s and 1960s, nostalgically transports audiences to a lively satire of the criminal underworld in pre-war America, coloured by a retro aesthetic.
The story reveals how a gangster massacre took place in Chicago on St. Valentine’s Day in 1929. Two jazz musicians accidentally witnessed it. To hide from the Mafia hitmen pursuing them, the musicians disguise themselves as women and join a women’s jazz orchestra. There they meet the charming singer Sugar Kane, who dreams of marrying a millionaire. The young men are swept into the whirl of women’s lives and encounter things that are not usually revealed to men. How long will they manage to keep hiding when scantily clad women are constantly around them, sharing their most intimate secrets? Events begin to unfold in a way that neither musician had planned.
The musical “Sugar” premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 9, 1972, starring Robert Morse, Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce. A total of 505 performances were staged over more than a year. The musical’s success is evidenced by “Sugar” productions returning to Broadway every few decades.
