“Let’s Make an Opera” is an educational work for children and young people by the renowned British composer Benjamin Britten. In 1949, Britten included his opera “The Little Sweep” in the larger project “Let’s Make an Opera!”, which invites the audience not only to watch the performance but also to become part of it.
The opera tells the story of Sam, a young chimney sweep who works in harsh conditions and suffers injustice at the hands of adults. A group of children decide to help him. Friendship, courage, compassion and solidarity prove stronger than fear, and the children’s ingenuity overcomes every obstacle.
Benjamin Britten believed opera could be close and accessible to every child. The work is therefore full of memorable melodies and playful scenes, and the young performers become the main heroes of the story.
