“God of Carnage” is one of the best-known plays by contemporary French writer, playwright and actress Yasmina Reza. It conquered the stages of Broadway and the West End and won the prestigious Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards. The work is recognised worldwide as one of the most successful comedies of recent decades, and its well-known film adaptation was made in 2011 by legendary director Roman Polański.
The play tells the story of two couples who meet to resolve a commonplace dispute: their children have fought, and one of the teenagers has been injured. Although the adults’ meeting begins in a friendly, tolerant and civilised atmosphere, the children’s quarrel soon becomes merely a catalyst. The parents’ own inner crises, deeply hidden alienation, loneliness and long-suppressed aggression begin to surface. The masks of politeness fall away, and a peaceful conversation turns into a true existential drama.
This is a sharp satire of contemporary society and a psychological comedy whose main weapons are irony and biting sarcasm. An intellectual yet painfully frank portrayal of the human condition will make every audience member reflect on life’s eternal values.
