Put simply, “Seniors” is a simple play about the extraordinary lives of ordinary pensioners. The title clearly suggests what it is about: old age. But who can say what old age is like, or what it is? Comedy? Tragedy? Absurdity? Nonsense? Or perhaps the most important part of a person’s life? There are probably as many kinds of old age as there are kinds of people. For one person, it is a golden age; for another, hell; a third does not even understand what has happened to them and carries on as before: twenty years old inside, but an exhausted young man on the outside. A fourth can hardly wait for this nightmare to end; a fifth has never had as much fun as now; a sixth feels that everything is only just beginning…
“Judge a person by the way they spend their final days.” There is probably a good deal of truth in this saying. Rolandas Kazlas, director of “Seniors” and one of its performers, says: “I would like this play to give an ordinary pensioner more than a small pension can. And even more to a future senior. Although the characters in the play are Italian, I would like an older Lithuanian audience member who comes to see it to say, or quietly think to themselves: ‘This is about me,’ ‘I recognise a lot of this,’ or ‘This is exactly the kind of play I needed right now.’”
The cast is truly remarkable: three friends of the same generation and graduating class—Vitalija Mockevičiūtė, Evaldas Jaras and Rolandas Kazlas—meet again after many years and, remembering their youth, face approaching old age on stage. No one knows how old V. Mockevičiūtė is, but the actors’ combined age is quite substantial: 165 years! That is one hundred years more than the age at which people retire. So they should have enough experience to explore the world of seniors and the joys and hardships of old age.
We invite all who are old, want to grow old, or never grow old to see “Seniors”! You can escape old age. Where? Perhaps in the opposite direction to the passage of time: into childhood…
