The imagined story of Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl is a meeting between two towering figures of the 20th century, comparable to a clash of worlds. The two women were very different in both physical and spiritual terms, and their political views were entirely incompatible. Their differences are so obvious that reconciliation and dialogue between them seem impossible—just as dialogue between two dominant world orders seems impossible. But is it really impossible?
Maria Magdalena Marlene Dietrich (born in Berlin in 1901, died in Paris in 1992) was a German-American actress and singer whose career spanned nearly seven decades. She began her acting career in silent films (“The Little Napoleon,” 1923). Her role as Lola in director Josef von Sternberg’s film “The Blue Angel” (1930) brought her international fame. As her acting career waned (her last film was “Just a Gigolo,” 1978), she performed in various countries during the 1960s–1980s as a revue and cabaret singer. In 1960, Dietrich received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Helene Bertha Amalie Leni Riefenstahl (born in Berlin in 1902, died in Pöcking in 2003) was a German film director and photographer, as well as an actress and dancer. She was one of the best-known filmmakers working in Nazi Germany. Her documentaries “Triumph of the Will” and “Olympia” made her an active propagandist for the Third Reich. After World War II, she was pushed out of the film industry and became a photographer.
