“Looking in the Mirror” — Kazimieras Jakutis-Pagulbis’ autumn concert tour

This autumn, I’m bringing more than songs to the stage. I’m bringing my life.

My autobiographical book, *Looking in the Mirror*, has been published. It is a 232-page story that begins not with me, but with my grandfather Justin. Like me, he was a bard. He wrote poems and sang them as he walked around the village. Perhaps something of him stayed with me too—I can’t help singing either. But our lives turned out very differently. Wars, the Bolshevik era and nationalisation tossed my grandfather about. He never had the chance to build a firm foundation for himself and died in poverty at the age of 65. Things worked out differently for me. Why? Perhaps you’ll find the answer in the book. Or perhaps in the songs.

This autumn’s concert will be like a journey through my life: from my first love and the first songs I wrote in my youth, through my homeland, family, the Soviet era and the years of land reclamation, to Anykščiai, the present day, and a song written to my grandfather Justin’s verses. The book also contains many valuable historical photographs, and QR codes let you listen straight away to my songs related to the text.

While preparing the book, writer Jurgita Lieponė made me open again the diaries I’ve kept since 1983. I found all sorts of things there—beautiful things and not-so-beautiful ones. Love, disappointments, victories, foolishness, people and events I had almost forgotten. It all came back. Those memories gave rise to new songs, which you’ll hear live for the first time on this tour. After the concert, you’ll be able to take them home too, as a gift in a contemporary digital format.

In the book, I’ve told more about myself than I’ve ever told from the stage. Perhaps even more than I should. I wrote it thinking of my children and grandchildren. Today, I would give a great deal for the chance to open my grandfather Justin’s diary and read about whom he loved, what he feared, what he believed in and the paths he wandered. I don’t have my grandfather’s diary. So I’m leaving my own. And since I’ve had you—my listeners—for so many years, I want to share this story with you too.

Another important piece of news this autumn: our group is once again becoming a full line-up rock band. On stage: Aurimas Driukas (guitar, keyboards), Augustas Genutis (bass guitar), Kęstutis Didvalis (real drums) and, of course, the charming vocalist Vaida Jakutienė.

So this time I’m inviting you not simply to a concert, but to a two-hour journey through one person’s life, told in stories and songs. From my grandfather Justin to me. From the first songs to those written this year. From who I was to what I see today… looking in the mirror.

See you at the autumn concerts.
