The imagined story of Marlena Dytrich and Lėni Ryfenštal is a meeting between two leading 20th-century figures, on a scale comparable to a clash of worlds. The two women were very different in both their physical and spiritual worlds, and their political views were wholly incompatible. These differences are so obvious that reconciliation and dialogue between the two figures seem impossible—just as dialogue between two dominant world systems seems impossible. But is it really impossible?

Maria Magdalena Marlena Dytrich (born in Berlin in 1901, died in Paris in 1992) was a German-American actress and singer whose career spanned almost seven decades. She began her acting career in silent films (“The Little Napoleon”, 1923). Her role as Lola in director Josef von Sternberg’s film “The Blue Angel” (1930) brought her international fame. As her acting career waned (her last film was “Just A Gigollo”, 1978), she performed in various countries during the 1960s–1980s as a revue and cabaret singer. In 1960, Dytrich received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Helena Berta Amalia Lėni Ryfenštahl (born in Berlin in 1902, died in Pöcking in 2003) was a German film director and photographer, as well as an actress and dancer. She was one of the most famous filmmakers working in Nazi Germany. Her documentaries “Triumph of the Will” and “Olympia” made her an active propagandist for the Third Reich. After being pushed out of the film industry following World War II, she became a photographer.
