“An Open Couple” (N-16)
A comedy by Dario Fo, Franca Rame and Jacopo Fo
Director: Antanas Obcarskas
A man. A wife. A marriage. A crisis. The heroes of the comedy “An Open Couple,” Antonia (Toma Vaškevičiūtė) and her husband (Giedrius Savickas), find themselves in a fairly traditional situation. The situation is traditional, but the way they try to resolve it is truly original. Even shocking! We bet you wouldn’t have thought of this. But the minds of our comedy’s heroes have taken a strange turn. “We’ll save our relationship only if we fundamentally change our cultural attitudes,” says the husband. “But that never happens. You know what does happen? A war of nerves, panic attacks, insomnia, piles of pills, consultations with psychologists and, finally, the madhouse,” Antonia initially responds to the idea skeptically. But in the end, HE persuades HER. To save their marriage, they agree to become an “open couple”: to have intimate relationships with others without hiding them, and then tell each other about their adventures at home, completely without shame or remorse. Perhaps one of you has tried this way of saving a relationship after all? If so, we’d very much like to hear how it went. Things did not go at all as our heroes imagined…
“This is a dance the couple must perform together, and both sides have to be ready for sudden turns. You can’t predict who will emerge the winner from a relationship like this,” says the production’s director, Antanas Obcarskas.
The comedy “An Open Couple” keeps you intrigued right up to the final seconds of the performance. Its striking finale comes as an even greater surprise to the audience. The comedy “An Open Couple” is based on the famous Italian play “Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata” (by Dario Fo, Franca Rame and Jacopo Fo). As soon as it began playing in Italy, the play caused a great stir because of its daring and uncensored content. The creators of the Lithuanian production “An Open Couple” warn that the issues discussed and situations portrayed may shock more sensitive audience members and may also be difficult for people under 16 to understand.
