Laurynas Adomaitis, Antanas Obcarskas: Boxing

Driven by an unquenchable fighting spirit, the performance “Boxing” is a sports-mystical travel drama about two generations of fighters. Saúlas (played by Laurynas Jurgelis) is a talented boxer whose exceptional potential is spotted by the club’s coach (played by Marius Repšys), who wants to make him world champion at any cost. Tsiganas (played by Gediminas Rimeika) is a boxer pushed into the background who refuses to accept his outsider status. Sensing his ambition, a businessman (played by Giedrius Savickas) takes the young athlete under his wing and seeks to overcome the traumas of his own life. Which of them will be knocked out?

The face-off between the two young boxers, Saúlas and Tsiganas, at a local club sparks global ambitions that reach beyond geographical—and sometimes even physical—boundaries. The young men’s journey to discover the fighter within becomes a way for old wolves to settle their scores. On the one hand, society honours fighters as heroes; on the other, it rejects them, accusing them of aggression. The fighter’s paradox gives rise to a tendency towards self-destruction. Boxers destroy their opponents, yet after winning they often feel they have destroyed themselves. Unlike other sports, nobody “plays” boxing. That is why real fighters will appear on the theatre stage, under the supervision of professional coaches. The actors’ physical and psychological preparation for the performance is unique.
