The film’s protagonist, Morten, cannot find his place in the school environment. Exclusion and pressure from his classmates make him ask ever more painfully where he belongs and who he really is. When two girls enter Morten’s life—Miia, who is involved in street art, and Emilie, a mysterious girl from the bog—he finds himself between two worlds: everyday reality and the mystical, the city and the bog, first feelings and painful choices. Told with warmth and understanding, “Morten” combines a delicate portrayal of young people’s inner lives with social sensitivity and a mystical dimension. It is an engrossing film about self-discovery, the pain of being invisible, friendship and first feelings—and the courage to remain yourself even when the world around you makes that far from easy.

“Morten” is based on the award-winning book “Morten, Emilie ja kadunud maailmad” by writer Reeli Reinaus. Tõru Kannimäe (“Fränk”) plays the title role. Helena Maria Reisner (“Seltsimees laps”) and Emili Rohumaa also play important roles, alongside Külli Teetamm, Andres Mähar, Priit Loog and others. The screenplay is by Reeli Reinaus and the film is directed by Ivan Pavljutškov. The cinematographer is Ants Tammik, the composer is Titas Petrikis, the sound designer is Jonas Jocys, the editor is Ričardas Matačius, the production designer is Ketlin Kasar, the costume designer is Neoon Must and the makeup artist is Kelli Neitsov. The film was produced by Kopli Kinokompanii with Lithuanian co-producer Fralita Films. The producer is Anneli Ahven and the co-producer is Zivile Gallego. The film is supported by the Estonian Film Institute, the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the Tartu Film Fund and the Lithuanian Film Centre.

“Morten” had its world premiere at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. “Morten” opens in cinemas across Estonia on 11 September. The film is distributed by ACME Film.
