1 December — Supportive Tuesday at Pärnu Vabakonna Maja
Topic: From mental health care to psychiatric treatment — what is changing?
Mental health concerns can take many different forms. Sometimes we need rest, a change in our daily routine, or someone to talk to. At other times, the issue is a serious mental disorder that requires medical care and treatment. How can we tell the difference? What can we do to prevent mental health concerns from getting worse? And how can we ensure psychiatric care is available to those who urgently need it?
Our guest this time is Raine Pilli, Head of the Psychiatric Clinic at Pärnu Hospital. We will discuss preventing mental health problems, when psychiatric treatment is needed, and the possibilities and limitations of specialist care.
WE WILL DISCUSS:
* When is psychiatric treatment necessary for a mental health concern, and when can a person be helped in other ways?
* How can we recognise warning signs of a more serious mental disorder and prevent problems from worsening?
* What role do the individual, their loved ones, and their surroundings play in maintaining mental health?
* Why is it important to have different kinds of support available for mental health problems of varying severity?
* What is changing in access to psychiatric care? A legislative amendment is being prepared in Estonia under which, in future, appointments with a psychiatrist would require an e-referral, following an initial assessment by a family doctor or mental health nurse. We will discuss the proposed changes and what they mean for people who need help.
Dr Raine Pilli, Head of the Psychiatric Clinic at Pärnu Hospital and psychiatrist, will share her professional knowledge and experience and help us better understand when psychiatric treatment is needed and what changes are ahead in the organisation of psychiatric care.
There will be time for participants’ questions and a group discussion at the end of the meeting.
