The story of the Metsola family, beloved by Finns, comes to life on the stage of Kuopio City Theatre! Metsolat – Urjanlinna takes audiences on a nostalgic journey to 1980s Kainuu, to the fictional village of Hoikka, where both the Leppävaara farm and the Metsola family face major changes. In the division of the inheritance, the Metsolas’ land is divided among the children. The family’s youngest son, Erkki Metsola, decides to establish the Urjanlinna ski resort in his home village. When the scale of the plan becomes clear to Hoikka’s residents, there is no shortage of envious opponents. Kari Kaukovaara, from the neighbouring farm in particular, sets out to obstruct the project by every means possible. The themes of this story, set in the late 1980s, still resonate in Finland today. With warmth, a vivid sense of life and a twinkle in its eye, the play delves into family bonds, tensions between generations and changes in rural life. Miisa Lindén, a screenwriter from the original TV series team, has brilliantly adapted the first season of Metsolat for the stage. The entire beloved cast of characters comes to life on stage—the characters Finns lived and breathed alongside in the 1990s. This engaging drama holds your attention to the end, even if you never watched the TV series. Metsolat is a drama series produced by Yleisradio from 1993 to 1995, with every episode attracting more than one million viewers.
