Looking for an exhibition to see in Hjo this winter? From 26 November 2026 to 9 January 2027, Kulturkvarteret presents photographs by Conrad Brolin in Lilla Galleriet. Admission is free, and the opening reception is Thursday 26 November, 18:00–20:00.

About the exhibition

In 1998, Conrad Brolin’s photographs were discovered in connection with the opening exhibition at Virserums konsthall. Among the nearly 10,000 collected photographs from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, his images stood out as a unique artistic discovery. In 2000, a temporary exhibition of his work followed.

Brolin worked as a typographer, but his great passion was photography. A self-taught photographer, he devoted himself intensively to his artistic practice and set up his own darkroom in the basement. He came to Virserum in the 1930s, where he became involved in the local photography club and received several awards. His passion for photography was expressed most clearly during the 1950s.

His photographs are distinguished by carefully considered compositions, aesthetic sensitivity and a visual style that clearly reflects the 1950s. With a particular eye for perspective and staging, he captured moments from everyday life and gave them their own visual force. The result is images that are more than historical documents—they are independent works of art.

Known in Virserum but largely undiscovered beyond the local area, Conrad Brolin’s exhibition invites visitors to rediscover his photographic work and experience his unique perspective on people and everyday life. The images captivate with their timeless aesthetic and show how ordinary moments can be transformed into works of art.
