A cosy guided evening tour focusing on trout

Join us in the autumn darkness and experience one of Hjo’s most fascinating natural phenomena. For a few weeks each autumn, trout migrate up the Hjoån to spawn. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, you can follow the fish’s journey up close, equipped with a flashlight, rubber boots and curiosity.

A unique autumn adventure for all ages

Every autumn, trout leave Lake Vättern and migrate up the Hjoån to spawn. In the evenings, you can follow their migration up close with guides who talk about the fish’s life, nature and the work to preserve trout reproduction—a much-loved autumn tradition in Hjo for more than 30 years. In the glow of the flashlights and surrounded by the sounds of nature, the tour is a special experience for young and old alike.

In the heart of the Hjoån Valley nature reserve

The Trout Safari takes you through the Hjoån Valley, a scenic nature reserve in the middle of Hjo that is popularly known as “Hjo’s jungle”. During the evening, you’ll follow the winding stream, see waterfalls and walk through dense deciduous forest while the guides talk about the area’s nature and the fascinating spawning migration.

The Hjoån has been an important part of Hjo’s history for more than a thousand years. The town’s first mills, smithies and industries grew up here, and many traces of them can still be seen in the landscape. To find out more about the valley, click “More about the Hjoån”.

How does the Trout Safari work?

The tour starts at Grebbans Kvarn, where the guides explain the trout’s life cycle and the fascinating spawning migration from Lake Vättern to Mullsjön. You then follow the Hjoån on foot through the nature reserve, looking for trout by flashlight. Along the way, the guides talk about nature, wildlife and efforts to preserve the trout’s habitat.
