Discover bathing culture in Hjo more than a hundred years ago, and the health-promoting way of life there. With photographs and an advertising booklet from 1899 as our guides, we get a glimpse of Hjo’s pride for more than 50 years: Hjo Water Cure Establishment.

About Hjo Water Cure Establishment

Hjo Water Cure Establishment opened in 1878. A large bathing park was laid out, and in the years that followed several villas were built with guest rooms for visitors to the spa. Among other treatments, guests were prescribed natural and artificial medicinal waters, mud baths, tar baths and electrotherapy. But a visit to the spa did not mean nothing but deprivation. Guests went on excursions or relaxed in the Society Salon. If they were not strolling in the bathing park, they might play lawn tennis with willing opponents. At the Bellevue bathing-house restaurant, they enjoyed fine three-course dinners and the view.
