Discover bathing culture in Hjo more than a hundred years ago. Through photographs and an advertising booklet from 1899, we get a glimpse of Hjo’s pride for more than 50 years: Hjo Water Cure Establishment.

About Hjo Water Cure Establishment

Hjo Water Cure Establishment opened in 1878. A large bathing park was laid out, and in the following years several villas with guest rooms for visitors to the spa were built. Among other things, guests were prescribed natural and artificial health waters, mud baths, tar baths and electrical treatments.

But a visit to the establishment was not all about abstinence. Guests took part in excursions or relaxed in the Society Salon. If they weren’t strolling in the bathing park, they might play lawn tennis with some willing opponents. At the Bellevue bathing restaurant, they enjoyed fine three-course dinners and the view.
