Explore bathing culture in Hjo more than a hundred years ago, and the healthful way of life it offered. Guided by photographs and an advertising brochure from 1899, we gain an insight into Hjo’s pride for more than 50 years: Hjo Vattenkuranstalt.

About Hjo Vattenkuranstalt

Hjo Vattenkuranstalt opened in 1878. A large bathing park was laid out, and over the following years several villas with guest rooms were built for visitors to the spa. Among other things, guests were prescribed natural and artificial health waters, mud baths, tar baths and electrotherapy. But a stay at the spa was not all about self-denial. Guests went on excursions or relaxed in the Societetssalongen. If they weren’t strolling in the bathing park, they might play lawn tennis with willing opponents. At the Bellevue bathing restaurant, they enjoyed good three-course dinners and the view.
