About Fahrenheit 451

Guy Montag is no ordinary firefighter. He starts fires instead of putting them out. On behalf of the state, he burns books—all the old printed books that might be called “literature” and are therefore thought capable of leading people astray and making them imagine they can change the world. He burns both the books and the houses where he finds them—sometimes even the people inside, if they put up a fight. Then he goes home to his wife, Mildred, who spends her days in front of the TV. But then Guy meets Clarisse, a seventeen-year-old neighbor who makes him think, and he realizes the power of independent thought and the help he finds in the literature everyone despises. Those around him see Guy change from a loyal servant of the state into an enemy of the state.
