Malmö Museum’s major new urban history exhibition takes you on a journey through 150 years of everyday life, struggle, crisis and creativity in Malmö—from industrialisation to the knowledge city. In 1870, Malmö became Sweden’s third-largest city and an important part of the country’s industrialisation. How did the city undergo this rapid transformation from a provincial town on the outskirts of the realm into an industrial powerhouse? The exhibition is on view at Teknikens och sjöfartens hus, Malmöhusvägen 7.
150 years of Malmö’s history
The exhibition tells the story through universal events, objects and personal accounts spanning 150 years in Malmö. We don’t stop at the rise and flourishing of the industrial city, but move on through world wars, disasters and economic crises to what the city represents today: a cocky, creative underdog that refuses to be subdued.
The exhibition tells part of Malmö’s history:
Malmö grows 1870–1896
We are thousands 1896–1914
Higher wages and more bread 1914–1918
Sweden’s most modern city 1918–1939
On the sidelines of the war 1939–1945
Towards brighter times 1945–1964
The city and capital 1964–1985
From collective to individual 1985–2018
Have you seen Malmö, you’ve seen the world
