Richard Dubugnon: Chamber Symphony No. 2, Op. 77 (2017)
Bernhard Crusell: Horn Concerto
Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120 (1841)

Richard Dubugnon’s Chamber Symphony No. 2 is an energetic, richly coloured orchestral work in which a modern musical language meets classical form. Dubugnon is known for his virtuoso orchestration, and in this piece he creates a compact, tense and surprising whole that holds the listener’s attention from beginning to end.

Crusell’s concerto, once thought to have been lost, is a significant historical Finnish wind concerto. The soloist is Tommi Hyytinen, who also performed the work’s reconstructed “premiere” a couple of years ago.

“Bernhard Crusell composed the horn concerto around the same time as his internationally renowned clarinet concertos. The virtuosic first movement contains clarinet-like runs and wide leaps that truly challenge the soloist’s technique. The concerto’s second movement, Romance cantabile, is a very beautiful and lyrical aria. The joyful, energetic third movement, Rondo allegro, features rapid and surprising turns. Crusell’s concerto is an important addition to the early Romantic horn repertoire and a highly significant historical Finnish wind concerto.”
—Tommi Hyytinen

Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony is a masterpiece of the Romantic period, in which four movements merge into a seamless, tense whole. The work grows from a dark-toned opening towards a brilliant finale, with Schumann’s characteristic passion, poetry and inner glow running throughout. This symphony is a journey towards the light—full of drama, sensitivity and the composer’s unique imagination.

Duration approximately 1 hr 30 min, including an interval. The concert is included in the Season Ticket and Mini Series 2.

Organised by Kuopio Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets: €34.60 / €28.10 for pensioners and groups of at least 20 people / €10.60 for children under 16 and students.
