Jarkko Martikainen, Petri Tiainen & Janne Mathlin

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jarkko Martikainen will tour concert halls this autumn with a revamped lineup. Instead of the duo familiar from previous tours, the stage will now feature a trio, with percussionist Janne Mathlin joining Martikainen and Petri Tiainen. The tour will include performances at, among other venues, the main stage of Tampere Workers’ Theatre and Helsinki’s Savoy Theatre.

“We had been rehearsing and performing with Petri for about two years when we started talking about our dreams for the future. A desire for more varied expression and changing dynamics had led us both to consider adding a third musician, and independently we both named Janne Mathlin,” Martikainen says of how the trio came together.

The trio lineup adds a significant new dimension to the concert programme. The tour will feature both new songs and newly arranged versions for the trio of songs from throughout Martikainen’s extensive career. The set list is built around material from his nine solo albums, and also includes a selection of songs from his time with the band YUP.

“To put it concisely, the range of colours has become significantly broader. The oldest and newest songs will be about 32–35 years apart. Some songs will become more danceable, others more harmonious than before. Some will become more playful, while others will have an even sterner expression,” Martikainen describes the upcoming tour.
