Nachtland

After an elderly man dies, his children gather to sort through the worldly possessions he left behind. Among them, they find an old painting. A closer examination leads to considerable confusion about its provenance, because when a possible artist is identified, things take on a humorously serious tone. Does the artist’s signature increase the painting’s value (financially) or decrease it (morally)? Can a work of art and its artist be treated separately? Suddenly, they are caught up in a tragicomic ideological argument that becomes increasingly telling about the era we all live in today. “Nachtland” is a tragicomic battle from which only one can emerge victorious … the audience. A sharp comedy by Marius von Mayenburg, currently Germany’s most-performed playwright, “Nachtland” was first staged at Berlin’s Schaubühne theatre in late 2022.
