Nachtland

After the death of an elderly man, his children gather to put his worldly belongings in order. Among other things, they find an old painting. A closer examination causes quite a stir over its provenance, because once a possible artist is identified, things take a humorously serious turn. Does the artist’s signature increase the painting’s value (financially), or decrease it (morally)? Can a work of art and its artist be considered separately? Suddenly, they find themselves embroiled in a tragicomic ideological debate that becomes increasingly emblematic of the era we all live in today. “Nachtland” is a tragicomic battle in which only one side can emerge victorious … the audience. A sharp comedy by Marius von Mayenburg, currently Germany’s most frequently performed playwright, “Nachtland” was first staged in late 2022 at Berlin’s Schaubühne theatre.
