Based on Ketil Bjørnstad’s novel “For Music,” Diana Leesalu has created a production about dedication in pursuit of becoming the best. One of history’s greatest pianists, Arthur Rubinstein, claimed that he never practised for more than three hours a day. “Because there are books I want to read, women I want to meet, pictures I want to look at, wine that needs to be drunk,” he said. But to allow yourself to practise for only three hours a day, you have to be Arthur Rubinstein. Others practise seven or twelve hours a day. Undoubtedly, though, it is a heavy price to pay for the chance to be at the top. Especially since practice alone is not always enough. To communicate something extraordinary to others, an artist must also possess that unexplainable something … But what is it? “I start with Chopin’s études, as usual. How many times have I played them already? Three hundred and fifty? Five thousand? How many times has the fourth finger of my right hand let me down in the chromatic passages of the second étude? How many times have I felt no muscle pain when playing the notes of the étude in C major?” Ketil Bjørnstad, “For Music”
