Japanese calligraphy, or shodō, is an ancient art of writing that originated in China and has been practised in Japan for over 1,500 years. The aim of the Japanese calligraphy workshop is to introduce and practise the basic techniques of Japanese calligraphy. Japanese calligraphy is an art form that reflects Japanese culture and aesthetics. It is a meditative practice for achieving harmony between body and mind. With energetic, elegant brushstrokes, it expresses both words and different shades of emotion. Black ink on white paper symbolises purity, clarity and the balance of the universe. White paper represents silence, emptiness and potential, giving written characters depth and meaning. Everyone interested is welcome to the workshop. No previous calligraphy experience is required. Materials for practising calligraphy (brushes, ink and paper) are provided on site. Workshop stages:
- Getting to know the materials.
- Exploring the words (characters) and choosing which ones to practise.
- Practising brushstrokes without ink.
- Practising characters with ink.
- Writing a final copy.
- Signing the final copy, if desired.
