On 5 December from 13:00 to 14:30, the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design will host the origami workshop “Six Corners and a Thousand Wishes” as part of the public programme for the exhibition “Contemporary Japanese Design.” Come explore the winter geometry and symmetry of the hexagon! In the workshop, we’ll create small forms without cutting or gluing, bringing together playfulness, concentration and hands-on creativity. To begin, we’ll learn about the Japanese tradition of paper folding. Senbazuru, a thousand paper cranes, carries wishes for health, long life and peace. We’ll fold a crane, too, which you can give as a gift with a good wish or hang on the Christmas tree. Then we’ll turn to winter geometry and learn to fold a hexagonal shape without a ruler or compass. We’ll experiment with how folding changes the shape and strength of paper, and how simple techniques come together to form a whole. In the busy run-up to Christmas, folding offers a chance to pause and notice the material, the work of your hands and the creation of form. Both first-time folders and more experienced enthusiasts looking to develop their skills or rediscover origami are welcome. We’ll start with simpler folding techniques and progress step by step. The workshop will be led by sculptor Anne Rudanovski, professor in the Sculpture Department at Pallas University of Applied Sciences and one of the leading figures at the Estonian Origami Centre. She has devoted decades to origami and further developed her skills in Japan, Korea and China. All materials, including Japanese origami paper, will be provided. Bring your curiosity and a readiness to explore! Young people and adults are welcome.
