On 24 November at 19:00, the closing concert of the “Ethnojazz” project, “Ethnojazz vol. Bārta”, will take place in the Chamber Hall of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”. The concert will feature the premieres of ethnojazz compositions created by LMMDV students and inspired by Bārta’s traditional musical heritage. During the project, the young musicians explored Bārta’s traditional melodies, vocal polyphony traditions and ethnomusicology through lectures, masterclasses, research and rehearsals. The knowledge they gained provided the basis for a creative experiment: under the guidance of mentors, traditional musical material was translated into the language of contemporary jazz. The concert will feature around ten new works, bringing together Bārta’s traditional sound, jazz, improvisation and the young musicians’ own creative vision. It will be an opportunity to see traditional music not as a relic of the past, but as living material for new creations that can continue to resonate today. Financial support was received through the “Kurzeme Cultural Programme 2026”, implemented by the Kurzeme Planning Region, under the State Culture Capital Foundation’s target programme “Development Programme for Latvia’s Historical Lands”.
