Huolto 4:18 is an anarchist tragicomedy produced in collaboration by Myllyteatteri and Helsinki 98, where humour bursts forth and reveals something we would rather not see. The performance offers a stark picture of the inner world of an individual institutional worker in a time when the resources of the precariat are being drained completely. Built in the old Vuosaari upper secondary school, this site-specific performance invites the audience into the middle of a deteriorating school building. It breathes dust and the past. One person appears onstage: former clown and current institutional cleaner Myrsky Hartikainen. The school has closed, and their own future is under threat. All that remains is a storeroom full of memories—and insomnia eating away at the edges of reason. The performance draws inspiration from Kae Tempest’s album Let Them Eat Chaos, Todd Phillips’s film Joker, and Sarah Kane’s play 4.48 Psychosis. The multidisciplinary team consists of creators working in object theatre, performance art, clowning and absurdist theatre, and creates a stage language that is at once grotesque, movingly unpredictable and piercingly precise. At the heart of the work is a dark clown aesthetic: nothing is sacred and anything is possible. This clown does not comfort—the clown exposes.
