NIGHT CONCERT. VIENNESE CLASSICS
Kai Kallastu (soprano), Andrus Kallastu (piano)
Programme: Beethoven, Haydn
IN SEARCH OF A LOST BELOVED
We invite listeners to join a search for a lost beloved. Our guides are Haydn and Beethoven, whose music expresses the paradoxes of love—hope and disappointment, affection and anger, loneliness and the desire to be understood. At night, the questions become more troubling. Where did they go? Do they know they are awaited?
Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte (1816) is the first complete song cycle in the history of music; its six songs tell a story of distant love. In Haydn’s dramatic cantata Ariadne auf Naxos, the classical heroine Ariadne mourns the departure of her beloved Theseus. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s passionate and emotional concert aria Ah! Perfido, which speaks of betrayal, pain and forgiveness.
Soprano Kai Kallastu earned a master’s degree in classical singing at Helsinki Metropolia University in Finland and has taken part in numerous masterclasses. She has performed as a chamber vocalist, soloist in large-scale works and music-theatre artist with various ensembles in different countries. Her repertoire ranges from Renaissance music to contemporary works, and she has premiered experimental vocal works by several composers. Her intensive creative work connects her with her husband, composer and conductor Andrus Kallastu, with whom she has performed dozens of vocal programmes.
Composer and conductor Andrus Kallastu studied at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) and the Sibelius Academy, and has worked as a freelance artist since 2000. Several of Kallastu’s works reflect his interest in combining music with other art forms and in performance. His work as a performer and artistic director of projects is often connected with music theatre. Alongside traditional music-theatre work, he aims to develop its specific fields: mystery-like ecclesiastical compositions and the visualised concert.
The concert lasts approximately one hour. Latecomers will not be admitted. Photography and filming are not permitted.
Single ticket: €30, available at the venue half an hour before the concert (cash payment).
