Children’s Electronics Dismantling Day

Come and dismantle electronics with us! When electrical devices are broken or simply outdated, that doesn’t necessarily mean they need to be thrown away completely. Even if a device itself can no longer be repaired, many of its internal parts can be reused. For example, a small motor inside an old computer’s CD drive can be connected to a battery and turned into a toy car. What makes dismantling electronics exciting is that machines contain a huge number of strange little parts. An ordinary home printer, for instance, may contain 300–500 different parts, large and small; an office printer can have as many as 1,000! There are tiny screws, pieces of plastic, wires… and every part has its own job. Taking machines apart with different tools is part of everyday life for electronics repairers. Now beginner repairers can try it too!

During the workshop, children will learn how to use tools, open devices safely and sort different materials. We’ll talk about reuse and new ways to use the parts we remove. We’ll learn how to take electronic devices apart while keeping the parts we’re interested in intact. It’s a useful skill for a future repairer.

We’ll sort together the useful bits collected during the dismantling day for Paranduskelder, so they can be put to good use in future repair projects. You can take some of the more interesting parts home, too ;)

The workshop is for children aged 6–99. Children up to and including age 9 must bring a parent. The event will continue until all the machines have been smashed apart or the last dismantler runs out of energy. After the event, we’ll return the children completely in one piece; the machines won’t be so lucky!
