Arunädala closing event: “Who Shapes the Future of AI?” Who will shape the future of AI, who will control increasingly capable technology, and what does the rapid development of AI mean for international relations and small countries like Estonia?

On 22 November, we’ll close Arunädal in Tallinn at Kino Sõprus with the Estonian premiere of *Intelligence Rising* (United Kingdom, 2025), a documentary by Oscar- and BAFTA-winning director Elena Andreicheva.

*Intelligence Rising* explores humanity’s efforts to gain control of the race to develop AI before it is too late. At the centre of the film is entrepreneur and new father Marci, who wants world leaders to take AI-related risks more seriously. His plan? To create a war game—a geopolitical role-playing exercise—that takes us ten years into the future of AI development. Will AI become a tool for good, or will everything go terribly wrong?

The film follows the tense course of the war game, in which generals, ambassadors and philosophers confront increasingly capable AI. To combat a new global pandemic, they invest in AI development, but AI grows so capable that controlling it becomes increasingly difficult. Meanwhile, society tries to adapt to a situation in which people are losing both their jobs and their sense of purpose. Can the participants set aside geopolitical differences and work together for the good of all humanity?

Interwoven with the tense future scenarios are Marci’s reflections on the nature of intelligence as he cares for his son. These moments offer a change of pace from the game’s tense progression.

Before the premiere, Indrek Ibrus, Professor of Media Innovation at Tallinn University, will help put the questions raised by the film into an Estonian context.
