23-year-old Rakel shares an apartment in Oslo with her best friend Ingrid. She has abandoned her graphic design studies, draws comics and enjoys her freedom. She has lots of plans, but becoming a mother isn’t one of them. So it comes as a huge shock when she discovers that she is already six months pregnant after a casual one-night stand, and it is too late to terminate the pregnancy. The father could be Mos, her aikido instructor, or someone else. Meanwhile, the baby growing inside Rakel, a drawn “ninjababy,” starts talking to her, commenting on her choices and interfering in her life.

“Ninjababy” is a funny, unafraid of rude humour, yet heartfelt film about coming of age, responsibility and a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her life. The film’s animation was created by graphic novelist Inga H. Sætre. The film premiered at the Tromsø International Film Festival in 2021, screened in the Generation 14plus programme at the Berlin International Film Festival, and won the Audience Award at SXSW. Kristine Kujath Thorp received the Amanda Award for Best Actress for her leading role.

The screening is held in collaboration with the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Admission to the screening is included with an exhibition ticket.

We also invite everyone to visit the solo exhibition “Island in the Sea” by acclaimed artist Jane Jin Kaisen, currently on view at Kai Art Center. This captivating journey through seven films delves into the depths of Korean traditions and history. Kaisen’s work is being shown in the Baltics for the first time. The gallery is open until 6 pm, so please visit the exhibition before the film screening begins.
