For the younger sister, Bianca, to be allowed to marry, her father has decreed that the elder, Katarina, must marry first. Bianca has no shortage of suitors because of her gentle nature, but Katarina inspires fear and disgust in everyone. When one of Bianca’s admirers hires Petruchio to woo the famous shrew, there is no method Petruchio considers too dishonest or cruel in his efforts to tame her. Shakespeare’s comedy sharply and precisely reveals the roles men and women skilfully play, sometimes without even noticing that it is no longer a game but a cruel struggle. This play offers an opportunity to tell an almost mythical story about a woman who did not want to play her role, and to ask questions that have not lost their significance over time. Are the games we play with one another a struggle for power or survival? What is the value of playing the role assigned to us brilliantly? What is the worth of harmony born of acting out a part?
