Beyond the Tatami: The Life of an International Karate Referee

What do we know about karate? For some, it’s a martial art; for others, a sport; and for others still, a philosophy and a way of life. But what happens behind the scenes at international competitions? Who decides which athletes win and lose? And what does it take to earn the right to officiate at an international level?

Our guest at the GANT Discussion Club will be Vadim Alyunin, an international karate referee, a member of the Referee Committee of the Estonian Karate Federation, and a second-dan Shotokan karate practitioner.

At this event, we’ll explore the world of sport karate and learn how modern competitive karate differs from the traditional martial art. We’ll discuss its two main disciplines—kata and kumite—the competition rules and scoring system, and how referees make split-second decisions that can determine the outcome of a match.

But the main topic of the evening is life on the other side of the tatami. How does someone become an international referee? How many years of study and practice does it take? How much time goes into preparation, exams, seminars and competitions? Can refereeing provide an income, or is it a pursuit that requires spending your own money? We’ll talk about the financial side of officiating in sport, constant travel, balancing refereeing with a main job and personal life, missed weekends, difficult decisions, psychological pressure, responsibility and professional ethics.

And, of course, we’ll discuss what sport gives in return: international connections, unforgettable experiences, new countries, personal growth and the chance to become part of a large sporting community.

Vadim will share stories from his own refereeing experience, including unusual situations at competitions and controversial decisions, and tell us what usually remains beyond the spectators’ stands. Why do people keep refereeing despite all the challenges? Where does a hobby end and professional responsibility begin? And is it worth it?

🔥 Join us for an open conversation about sport, travel, money, responsibility and the people for whom karate has become much more than just a hobby.
