Viljandimaa net lace course for beginners. In the course, participants will learn about the history of net lace and its different types, master the basic net lace technique, and then move on to the details of making the different types of net lace (there are three). They will try tracing a pattern from an existing object or a detailed photograph, and try drawing their own pattern. A little homework will be set for practice. Participants will learn the specific features of net lace embroidery. The instructor will provide a comprehensive net lace learning manual; its price is included in the course fee.
In the first class, participants will look at the tools: pliers/lace clamps, net lace needles, mesh sticks and thread. If they wish, they can buy a needle from the instructor (€2) and borrow pliers. The price of the mesh stick and thread is included in the course fee. Each participant can decide for themselves how to use or acquire the remaining tools.
Course dates:
12 September at 11:00
10 October at 11:00
21 November at 11:00
The course is led by Marika Palu-Üpraus, who graduated in textile handicrafts at level 4 from Tallinna Kopli Rakenduslik Kolledž and at level 5, specialising in lace, from Räpina Aianduskool. Both of her graduation projects were about net lace. She has taught various lace techniques at Tallinna Rahvaülikool, in folk costume workshops at the Tõstamaa summer camp, and at Mardilaat. She is dedicated to reviving and promoting the net lace technique in Estonia.
Tickets for the course cost €120 and are available through the Sviby/Piletikeskus platform HERE. The course takes place in the courtyard building of Viljandi Muuseum, Tõrukoda (Lossi 14). The course is supported by Eesti Kultuurkapital.
