Three MiniDV tapes, recording life in Gaza in 2001, were recently found again. The search for a former fellow prisoner led to an unexpected journey from the north of Gaza to the south, accompanied by Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown to this day. The film reflects on memory, loss and the passage of time. It is a record of Gaza in the past and of lives that may never be found again.
After the screening, there will be a reflective discussion led by programme curator Vivek Jain. The discussion will be in English.
The screening is part of the programme “The Image Does Not Retreat”. The programme’s three films, made over a period of thirty-five years, work with images that already exist. They ask who becomes visible and on whose terms, and what an image can do when the world it captured has been destroyed. The programme considers cinema as gathering and remembering as resistance.
