For the younger sister, Bianca, to be allowed to marry, her father has stipulated that the elder, Katarina, must marry first. Bianca has no shortage of suitors because of her meek nature, but Katarina inspires fear and disgust in everyone. When one of Bianca’s admirers hires Petruchio to woo the famous shrew, no means seem too dishonest or cruel to Petruchio as he sets about taming her.

Shakespeare’s comedy reveals, harshly and precisely, the roles that men and women play so skillfully—sometimes without even noticing that it is no longer a game, but a cruel struggle. This play offers an opportunity to tell an almost mythical story about a woman who did not want to play her part, and to ask questions that have not lost their significance over time. Are the games we play with one another a struggle for power or survival? What is the value of playing the role assigned to us so brilliantly? What is the worth of harmony born of playing theatre?
