For the younger sister Bianca to be allowed to marry, her father has decreed that the elder, Katarīna, must marry first. Bianca has no shortage of suitors because of her meek nature, but Katarīna inspires fear and disgust in everyone. When one of Bianca’s admirers hires Petručio to woo the famous shrew, no means seem dishonourable or cruel to Petručio in his efforts to tame her. Shakespeare’s comedy sharply and precisely reveals the roles men and women skilfully play, sometimes without even realising that it is no longer a game, but a cruel struggle. This play offers an opportunity to tell an almost mythical story about a woman who did not want to play her part, and to ask questions that have not lost their relevance over time. Are the games we play with one another a struggle for power or survival? What value is there in playing the role assigned to us brilliantly? What is the worth of harmony born from acting out a play?
