Tales from the Vienna Woods | Liepājas teātris

On a shopping street, a fateful encounter takes place: Marianne, a beautiful eco-toy seller, meets Alfred, an investor addicted to sports betting. Despite rising inflation, protests from conservative family members and a populist coup brewing in the country, the two young people leave their wealthy partners of the moment to follow love. What could possibly go wrong?

Ödön von Horváth wrote “Tales from the Vienna Woods” in 1931, yet the play still feels surprisingly relevant today. It depicts a world where fine words conceal an evasion of responsibility, clichés are presented as something highly original, and public image matters more than truth—as long as everything looks nice! Horváth’s characters live in an era familiar to people today: weariness with uncertainty prompts people to seek simplistic explanations, look for someone to blame and reach for immediate solutions without thinking about the consequences. It would all be very funny if it weren’t so tragic.

Johann Strauss’s waltz still plays, but do we hear what lies behind the beautiful music?
