“Look at all the loveliness around you, and you’re thinking about getting married at a time like this!” When Liene has to find an answer to the same question twice in one day, she chooses a path that promises freedom but sacrifices love. Rejected, Andris stands in the stable with his arm around his little grey mare, weeping. Wasn’t that in “Frost in Spring”? It was—but Rūdolfs Blaumanis ended the story there, while the play “Three Funerals and Two Weddings” seeks a continuation in the pages of his other works. In a cheeky remix of Blaumanis’s collected works, characters from various short stories and plays meet, their lives crossing and intertwining in a fateful tapestry that also portrays today’s society. When the most intimate moments become a public spectacle, a story of survival becomes a commodity, the virtues instilled from childhood become a trap, and you cannot even trust your own inner voice, a tragicomedy from a very different era comes to light.
