Ethnojazz vol. Bārta

The closing concert of the “Ethnojazz” project, “Ethnojazz vol. Bārta”, will take place in the chamber hall of the concert hall “Lielais Dzintars”. The concert will feature the premiere of ethnojazz compositions created by students of Liepāja Secondary School of Music, Art and Design, inspired by Bārta’s traditional musical heritage. During the project, young musicians explore Bārta’s melodies, traditions of vocal polyphony and ethnomusicological approaches through lectures, masterclasses, research into traditional music and rehearsals. The knowledge they gain becomes the foundation for new work, interpreting traditional musical material in the language of modern jazz. Around ten new compositions will be performed, weaving Bārta’s melodies together with jazz, improvisation and the young musicians’ creative vision. “Ethnojazz vol. Bārta” will show how musical traditions passed down through generations can take on a new sound and continue to live on in contemporary music. The project is implemented by the association “Kurzemes radošās industrijas attīstības centrs” in cooperation with LMMDV and the Bārta Ethnographic Ensemble. Funding was received through the “Kurzemes kultūras programma 2026”, implemented by the Kurzeme Planning Region, under the State Culture Capital Foundation’s targeted programme “Latviešu vēsturisko zemju attīstības programma”.
