Premiere | Tales from the Vienna Woods | Liepājas teātris

Premiere! A fateful encounter takes place on a shopping street: Marianne, a beautiful seller of eco-friendly toys, meets Alfred, an investor addicted to sports betting. Despite rising inflation, protests from conservative family members, and a populist coup brewing in the country, the two young people leave their wealthy partners to follow their hearts. What could possibly go wrong?

Ödön von Horváth wrote “Tales from the Vienna Woods” in 1931, yet the play still feels remarkably relevant today. It depicts a world where beautiful words conceal a refusal to take responsibility, clichés are presented as something highly original, and public image matters more than truth—as long as everything looks nice! Horváth’s characters live in an era familiar to people today: weariness with insecurity drives people to seek simplistic explanations, look for someone to blame, and reach for instant solutions without considering the consequences. It would all be very funny if it weren’t so tragic.

Johann Strauss’s waltz still plays, but do we hear what lies behind the beautiful music?
