He lived fast and without brakes. He could compose a song in fifteen minutes. He proudly shared a glass of beer with his dog. And it was impossible to argue with him. Etiquette did not apply to him, and he adored onions. He kept a chinchilla that had drowned in the toilet in the freezer, and calmed his nerves by knitting. Friendship was his religion; the stage was his land of happiness. These are just a few of the things that reveal Mārtiņš Freimanis’s paradoxical, highly contrasting personality. Almost fifteen years have passed since Freimanis’s death, and yet he is still here—in radio stations, memories and stories. Full of paradoxes and contrasts, untamed and cheeky. Mārtiņš repeatedly asked people not to turn his life story into a drama, but lived in a way that made that request difficult to fulfil. In his short life, Freimanis managed to leave behind a huge musical legacy and almost as many legends about his personality. People who knew Mārtiņš, both closely and from afar, still ask themselves: were his songs about the heavens and flying away a prophecy, or a cry for help that had been soothed? There are many theories, and although the outcome cannot be changed, it is intriguing to imagine what the man was like—someone we can now reconstruct only through memories and captured moments.
