The play “Strange Skin” is based on motifs from Dace Rukšāne’s popular novel “Russian Skin”. At its heart are the lives of two women—a mother and daughter—in post-war occupied Liepāja. It is a story about feelings that shatter every preconception, and about a woman’s longing for love, fulfilled dreams and a happy life. Although the two women shape and build their lives side by side, their lives run in parallel. In pursuit of a man’s love, Emīlija is unable to give love to her daughter, Meldra. The only things they share are secrets and silence—and scents, through which they each perceive, in subtle detail, the world and the era they live in. Scents fade and change, but memories and feelings remain. How can you love without hurting the person closest to you? How can you understand one another when speaking is forbidden?
