The traditional Sámi style of singing is joiking. Joiks are a kind of melodic meditation—a moment to surrender to thoughts, sensations and emotions. They also have another, magical function: to summon, ward off or protect something. They are not songs or melodies about something, but rather a way of inhabiting the form of an animal or a natural phenomenon. At the Liepāja Concert Hall, audiences will have the opportunity to experience this life-affirming music in a special concert programme, a gift to the people of Liepāja and visitors to the city from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway. Taking the stage will be South Sámi singer Marja Mortensone, a two-time winner of Norway’s Spellemann music award, together with her musical partners: tubist and composer Daniel Herskedal and percussionist Jakop Jansenn. Free tickets for the concert are available to everyone at any Biļešu paradīze box office or online.
