Piret Jaaks’s play “The Night Queen” is a tense story about the encounter between two very different people. After a tragic chain of events, Elli—who in her youth worked successfully as a singer at a famous opera house—must cope with life in Estonia, witnessing her inevitable decline every day. The intriguing plot gets underway when Jakob, a young and handsome social worker, appears on Elli’s doorstep. A man called Meemees has a mysterious role to play. Who is he? What is he up to, and what role does he have in Elli’s life? The answers may be surprising.
Through the example of two very different lives, Piret Jaaks’s play speaks both humorously and tragically about clashes and rifts in feelings, thoughts and understandings, and the fear that one’s “best before” date has passed. It also asks what remains of us after we are gone.
