A sommelier, wine traveller and organiser of wine expeditions, Vera prefers to get to know wine regions in person: visiting wineries, talking to winemakers, exploring terroirs and, of course, tasting wines where they are made.

I’ve just returned from another wine expedition. This time, we explored Sicily and the Aeolian Islands under sail, visited local wineries, tasted wines and tried to understand what makes Sicilian wine so remarkable. Now I’d love to share my discoveries with you!

Sicily is a special place. Grapes grow on the slopes of active volcanoes, sea breezes shape the character of the wine, and winemaking traditions go back thousands of years. Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Spaniards have all left their mark on the island’s culture. You can sense that history in the glass, too.

We’ll taste at least six Sicilian wines! 🥂 Sparkling, white, red and dessert wines: different grape varieties, terroirs and characters. We’ll discover wines from two Sicilian wineries: Cantine Fina and Fondo Antico.

We’ll also talk about:
🍇 Which indigenous grape varieties are worth knowing, and why Sicilian wine has long deserved more attention.
🌋 What volcanic soils bring to wine, and how the vineyards of Etna differ from those in other parts of the island.
🍷 Which Sicilian wines are worth looking for on shop shelves, and what to consider when choosing them.
⛵ How to combine a sailing trip with wine tourism, reach interesting wineries and discover Sicily from a completely different perspective.

And, of course, there’ll be stories from our expedition, fresh impressions, unexpected discoveries and plenty to share about local culture, people and wine.
