Joe Benjamin is a wealthy New York businessman who has everything in life—a beautiful home, a thriving business and a loyal family. He likes to say that it is God’s will, and that he accepts everything God gives him. One day, however, he meets a peculiar man, and that encounter sets in motion a series of events that are anything but pleasant for Joe. When his good fortune suddenly turns and one misfortune follows another, will he remain steadfast? What happens when a person’s faith is seriously put to the test—will they break or keep believing? Although the subject is based on a Bible story, this is really a story, spiced with plenty of humour, about a principled person who does not want to betray his convictions even when doing so is very harmful to him personally.
Eino Baskin, who directed the same material in 1990, said of the author: “By the way, Neil Simon is one of the cleverest guys in playwriting I’ve ever known. He knows how to build his plays on terrible contrasts: one moment it is pure comedy, the next pure tragedy.”
